SEMINAR #1:  Mass Timber Design and Construction 101 (1.0 LU)

Bio:  Dennis Mordan is Vice President and Managing Principal for O’Donnell & Naccarato, a 40-plus year old consulting structural engineering firm headquartered in Philadelphia. He has more than 35 years of engineering experience; 30 of which have been with O’Donnell & Naccarato. O&N supports projects of all types and sizes across the United States from its headquarters in Philadelphia and three regional offices. Dennis earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Villanova University (class of ‘88). His resume includes the structural design and management of building projects across every major construction sector, largely concentrated in healthcare, education, multi-family, office, commercial, industrial, high rise, and parking. Dennis has also personally overseen the design of four recent Mass Timber projects. He maintains licensure as a Professional Engineer in 11 states. He is a member of the Structural Engineering Certification Board, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Course attendees will gain an understanding of various natural and engineered wood products including: heavy timber, CLT, NLT, DLT, PSL, LVL, and glulam, etc.
  2. Course attendees will gain an understanding of the evolution of building code governing mass timber construction.
  3. Course attendees will gain an understanding of material sourcing, quality variances, scheduling, and cost.
  4. Course attendees will gain an understanding of special considerations including lateral design, layout, bay spacing, connections, and aesthetics.

SEMINAR #2:  Pennsylvania Construction Code Update for 2022 & the Top 10 Reasons for Plan Rejections (1.0 LU, HSW)

Bio:  Matthew Walter was named Vice President of the Public Division of Barry Isett & Associates in 2021, responsible for the growth and performance of the company’s Code Inspection & Plan Review; Municipal Engineering, Water & Wastewater; Transportation; Landscape Architecture; and Grantsmanship Departments.

A 24-year veteran of Isett at the time of his promotion, Mr. Walter’s career focus has always been in the public sector, with an emphasis on code enforcement. The Construction Codes Superintendent for the City of Allentown from 2002 to 2004, he previously had a five-year career at Isett in the Construction Services Department. Upon his return to Isett, he established our Code Inspection and Plan Review Department and grew it to a staff of more than 40. He established offices in seven regions throughout the Commonwealth and set departmental standards of professionalism and efficiency, always encouraging the professional development of his staff.

As the Vice President of the Public Division, he concentrates on the development of public sector clients and infrastructure projects, coordinating staff and services from the three departments to provide integrated, comprehensive services. Mr. Walter is a company shareholder.

Earlier in his career, he served as the Zoning and Code Enforcement Officer of the Borough of Pennsburg in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.  He also held the position of Fire Marshal concurrently in two Montgomery County municipalities — Green Lane Borough and Marlborough Township — where he was responsible for the plan review and fire inspections of commercial properties and conducted investigations into the cause of all fires within his jurisdiction.

  1. Identify the ICC construction codes being adopted in 2022 in Pennsylvania.
  2. Review the new code adoption dates, grace-periods and drop-dead dates for utilization of the 2015 ICC Codes.
  3. Identify the significant changes to the adopted codes and accessibility standards.
  4. Identify the top 10 reasons for plan review rejections and delays and how to prevent them.

SEMINAR #3:  Parapet Perplexities - Water, Air, Thermal, and Vapor Control  (1.0 LU, HSW)

Bio: Jennifer Keegan is the Director of Building & Roofing Science for GAF, focusing on overall roof system design and performance. Jennifer has more than 20 years of experience as a building enclosure consultant specializing in building forensics, assessment, design and remediation of building enclosure systems. Jennifer provides technical leadership within the industry as the Chair of the ASTM D08.22 Roofing and Waterproofing Subcommittee, and the education chair for IIBEC; and as an advocate for women within the industry as an executive board member of National Women in Roofing and a board member of Women in Construction.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand requirements to manage moisture, air, vapor, and thermal continuity.
  2. Understand code requirements and how to achieve compliance.
  3. Outline design and specification requirements to set achievable performance.
  4. Develop critical details blending form and function.

 


SEMINAR #4:  Building Sciences Quality Assurance - A Changing Practice (1.0 LU, HSW)
John Runkle, P.E. – Vice President, Building Science Solutions

Bio: John Runkle is the Vice President of Building Sciences Solutions for Architectural Testing, Inc., an Intertek company. He manages offices throughout North America the Middle East. Mr. Runkle has worked on new construction and retrofit projects for commercial, industrial and residential structures in most of the 50 states and several countries. John serves on the Building Commissioning Association’s International Board and is working with IIBEC to develop a certification for enclosurecommissioning. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Civil Engineering and is a licensed professional engineer in multiple states. John brings over 20 years of experience as a building enclosure consultant and enclosure commissioning provider and has been integral in the development of the practice area of building enclosure commissioning both domestically and internationally. His areas of expertise include roofing, claddings, fenestration andbelow grade waterproofing.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the full spectrum of services and performances that Building Science now encompasses so that tomorrow’s buildings will be better equipped to deal with today’s problems (e.g. intense Hurricanes, poor air quality, frequent fires, looming threat of earthquakes).
  2. Learn what type of quality assurance options there are for today’s construction projects and what is trending so that you can select the best value for your project to help ensure that the building actually performs as intended.
  3. Review the enclosure commissioning process, deliverables and functional performance testing options through case studies of the good and not so good outcomes.
  4. Explore today’s trends to predict where this industry is headed in the future so that we can better prepare to building quicker, have less waste and achieve sustainable building all at an affordable cost.
